Absolutely everyone knows the cinematographic works of the Swedish director Lasse Hallström, although perhaps not everyone has heard his name or paid attention to it in the credits.
His films have long become a classic melodrama.
Perhaps not everyone remembers one of the psychologically bright, but not the outrageous roles of Johnny Depp. in the 1993 film What Gilbert Grape Eats. But the film "Rules of winemakers" (1999) based on the novel by John Irving, in which Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron and Michael Kane is already quite famous, as is Chocolate (2000) with Juliette Binoche in the lead role. All the above pictures were shot by Hallström, firmly established in Hollywood after the international recognition of his works, shot in his homeland.
Incidentally, the director's career began with the filming of music videos. He is the author of the overwhelming majority of commercials of the Swedish group “AVVA”, which was extremely popular in the 1970s-80s. It is obvious that the creative potential of the master is very broad, but he likes to transfer to the wide screen most of all the shrill melodramatic plots. From the latest works Lasse delighted viewers of almost any age. Who of the movie lovers did not cry over the fate of the faithful dog Hachiko from the same movie in 2009! Subsequent tapes "Dear John" (2010) and "Fish of my dreams" (2011) confirmed the genre constancy of the director.
Already passed on the big screen film, apparently for nostalgic reasons, shot by the luminaries of Hollywood in Sweden. We are talking about the criminal thriller “Hypnotist”, striking with its naturalistic image of the atrocities that a brutal killer commits. In the next, very fresh American painting “Silent Harbor”, also disturbing notes are heard, and the tension does not leave the audience to the very end.The 2014 films will tell us about the further evolution of Hallström’s inner world.
