When will Halloween be?
Despite the incredible popularity of Halloween around the world and especially in English-speaking countries, in Russia it still remains exotic and its attitude towards it in society is ambiguous. Young people, who are receptive to everything new, gladly picked up the idea of celebrating this kind of holiday at parties in clubs and entertainment centers. Many people of the older generation not only do not know when it will be Halloween, but even have not heard anything about the holiday itself.
Halloween Holiday Story
We will try to fill this information gap and briefly tell the story of its occurrence. Celebrate Halloween on the night of October 31 to November 1. Scientists believe that this holiday is rooted in the traditions of the ancient Celts, who inhabited the territory of the modern British Isles at the beginning of our era. The prototype of Halloween is considered to be the ancient Celtic holiday Samhain (another option is Samhain). The Celts divided the annual cycle into two parts - summer and winter. According to their beliefs, on the night of the first of November the summer was ending and with the arrival of winter the new year began. The word "Samhain" itself translates from Celtic - "the end of summer". The Celts believed that on this sacred day the barriers between the world of the living and the world of the dead collapse and the gates to the other world open overnight, through which all evil spirits rush to earth in search of victims. They also believed that on this night the souls of people who died during the year come to their former homes in order to say goodbye to their loved ones and warm themselves for the last time around the fire.
In order not to become a victim of spirits or ghosts, the villagers left their houses, leaving food near them as a donation to the souls of relatives and lit fires in oak forests, which were supposed to scare away all evil forces.
Over time, the holiday changed, its mystical component gradually faded into the background. And when (approximately in the eighth century) the Catholic Church proclaimed the first of November as the Day of All Saints, the very name of the ancient holiday changed - now it's Halloween. This name, translated from Old English, literally means "All Saints' Evening."
Similarly, to say when the Halloween holiday has become as we know it, it is impossible.Estimated date - the beginning of the XIX century, when the tradition of celebrating Halloween Irish immigrants transferred to America. It was there that “Jack Lantern” was born - one of the main symbols of Halloween. A pumpkin with a grinning face carved on it, inside of which a candle is burning, on this day can be seen everywhere - in the windows of expensive shops, on the windowsills of small rural cottages, in schools and in entertainment establishments. In terms of its popularity and recognition, Jack Lantern can now argue with Santa Claus himself.
Another integral attribute of Halloween are costume parties. At first, children went to their homes in carnival costumes of various monsters. They begged for candy, biscuits and fruit, comically threatening their owners: "A joke or a treat!". The hosts feigned fear and gave the little tombs sweets and small coins. Then the idea of fancy dress liked and older public. Young people gladly dress in the costumes of witches, vampires, devils and other evil spirits and all night long celebrates Halloween in clubs and discos. Thus, the holiday finally lost all religious and mystical overtones and turned into a colorful fascinating show.
